MEATH | Citizens’ Dialogue on the Future of Europe

by European Movement Ireland

Ireland’s society and economy has been transformed by our membership of the EU, but a lot has changed since we joined in 1973. Every organisation, even successful ones like the European Union, needs to go through a process of renewal. The European Union is 60 years old and it is time to start a conversation about a new vision of a Europe.

The EU is looking to its citizens for guidance on what they want from the EU and how it can work better for them. How can the EU support jobs and growth? How can it provide opportunities for our young people? What is the EU’s role in meeting the challenges of today’s globalised world, from climate change to international terrorism?

On 19 April, we will be asking people living in the East to join this conversation and to feed into the Future of Europe process at a Citizens’ Dialogue in Meath County Council Offices:

This forms part of a series of regional events held since February in Galway, Cork, and Letterkenny. It will finish up with a major event in the Royal Hospital Kilmainham on Europe Day. The events are part of an engagement process that the Government have committed to following Commission President Juncker’s last State of the Union address, where he called on member states to engage in grassroots dialogue about Europe, to foster engagement, transparency and constructively critical dialogue.

During the Dialogues, participants at each table discuss a series of five different topics about the Future of Europe, led by a facilitator. Every table discusses each of these topics simultaneously, and each one takes part in a larger communal feedback session at the end. Finally, the floor is opened for general comments to ensure that everyone can voice opinions that they feel haven’t been explored.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and European Movement Ireland are delighted to invite you to join the Minister of State for European Affairs, Helen McEntee T.D., at this unique opportunity to discuss the role of Ireland and its citizens in the Future of Europe
