The National Biodiversity Data Centre is delighted to release two new free resources exploring the importance of native hedgerows, and how to plant them to help biodiversity.

We would like to thank the European Innovation Partnership (EIP) project for funding these resources. Protecting Farmland Pollinators was an EIP project funded under the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) under the Rural Development Programme 2014-2020.

Why are hedgerows important?

Hedgerows are an integral part of Ireland’s landscape, evident from an aerial perspective, they hold immense value for both humans and biodiversity. They provide food through blossoms and berries, act as crucial wildlife corridors, store carbon, and help mitigate fertilizer run-off. Planting a diverse native hedgerow stands as one of the most impactful contributions to enhancing biodiversity. The planting window is from November to February, so find out more about how hedgerows benefit biodiversity and plan your planting!
