Free local CPR training in your community: Irish Heart Foundation

The Irish Heart Foundation have developed the FREE Hands for Life CPR Programme which is very kindly sponsored by Abbott and ESB Networks.

Why are we asking you to help us?

13 people die from a cardiac arrest every day in Ireland and over 70% of these will happen in the home. Therefore, the chances are that if you ever need to perform CPR it will be on someone you know and care about, so we want to ensure that if you ever encounter this scenario you will be prepared by knowing how to perform CPR.

CPR is a simple skill and by attending this one-hour course your level of confidence and ability to perform CPR will greatly improve. We have designed an easy course which one of our experienced facilitators can come and deliver to your club/group/community.

The course concentrates on recognising cardiac arrest, making the emergency call, listening to the call taker and knowing your Eircode. Candidates then get to practice compression-only CPR on a manikin. Awareness of how to use an AED, how to help someone who is choking, how to perform CPR on a child, recognising stroke and the difference between a cardiac arrest and a heart attack are also covered – all in only one hour and for FREE.

Please note that those who attend the training must be over 18 years.

What we need in order to provide the training?

If you have a suitable venue and at least 90 people that would be interested in attending the training, we ask that you become a CPR Champion in your club/group/community. We need you and your friends to recruit as many people as possible so that we can train them in this life saving skill of CPR. When providing the courses, our aim is to conduct 3 one-hour training sessions with 30 attendees in each. These will be conducted in one day, in one location which will train at least 90 individuals in your community – all FREE of charge. We can discuss the timing of the courses with you, but can deliver them either during the day, an evening or at the weekend.

The instructor will bring manikins for participants to practice on along with their own laptop and projector to deliver a course. In terms of the room needed for the training we would need:

  • A screen to project the course on to, or a blank wall which can be comfortably viewed by all participants. The instructor will project the course video onto this.
  • The flooring needs to be suitable to kneel on for short periods of time.
  • 35 chairs are required for participants to sit on, these should be set out in a semi-circle, facing the screen/wall so everyone can view the video.
  • There should be enough space for 10 people to practice on the manikins on the floor at the front of the room.

How can we work together?

As a CPR Champion, we need you to recruit people to attend the training. We have posters available and a press release for the local papers. We are happy to do radio interviews to assist in the promotion of the course in your area. We can also provide Social Media posts to help promote the event.

We have received great feedback from those attending the FREE Hands for Life CPR courses and they have all felt it was worthwhile training. Facilitating Hands for Life CPR training is a great way for you to give back to your community and support your members by showing your commitment to their welfare through providing this FREE CPR training.

Thanks again for your interest and we hope this information helps. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any further queries or would like to discuss booking a training session. You can also call us at phone: 01 6685001 if that is easier.

Remember your hands can be the difference between life and death.

Many thanks,

Nicole Florio
