Meath County Council is inviting community organisations throughout the county to take part in Heritage Week 2026 by organising an event that celebrates the unique heritage, history, traditions, and stories of your local area.

Heritage Week 2026 will take place from the 15th to 23rd of August and the theme for this year is “Heritage at Risk”.

Heritage Week provides a wonderful opportunity for communities to come together, share local knowledge, and highlight the people, places, customs, skills, and memories that make each parish and townland special. Whether your interest is in archaeology, local history, folklore, music, crafts, genealogy, biodiversity, built heritage, sporting traditions, or community memories, Heritage Week offers a platform to showcase and celebrate it.

Events can be large or small and might include: guided heritage walks or tours, local history talks and exhibitions, storytelling and oral history sessions, traditional music, dance, or skills demonstrations, family history and genealogy workshops, biodiversity and nature heritage events, open days at historic buildings or sites or community heritage projects highlighting local traditions and memories

The Heritage Council have prepared a very useful guide of 101 Event ideas- see attached.

Meath County Council is available to provide any advice. If you are interested in running an event, please use the link provided and we will be in touch to set up a meeting: Heritage Week Event Consultation with the Heritage Office – Fill out form
