Meath Travellers Workshop Launches Winter-Ready Pack Initiative to Support Traveller and Settled Communities Across Meath

Meath Travellers Workshop is delighted to announce the roll-out of its new Winter-Ready Pack initiative, designed to support both Travellers and members of the settled community throughout County Meath during the challenging winter months. The project has been generously funded by Meath County Council Housing Department and the National Traveller Partnership (Department of Children, Equality, Integration and Youth)
A total of 50 Winter-Ready Packs have been assembled through a collaborative effort between our young Traveller group and our Men’s Shed project. Each pack includes essential items to help households stay warm, safe, and connected during severe weather conditions: a Thermos flask, single-hob gas camping ring, battery torch, hot water bottle, ground-frost salt shaker, warm blanket, and battery-powered radio.
This initiative places a strong emphasis on supporting older and more vulnerable community members who may be at greater risk during storms, floods, high winds, or freezing temperatures. People living in mobile or temporary homes, as well as those in older or less energy-efficient housing, can face significant challenges when weather conditions deteriorate. Rural isolation, slower access to emergency services, and age-related health issues such as mobility limitations or respiratory conditions can further increase vulnerability.
Beyond providing vital equipment, the project also offers an important social dimension. Young participants involved in assembling the packs will have the opportunity to deliver them directly and spend time with older or isolated members of both the Traveller and settled communities—helping strengthen intergenerational connections and reduce loneliness.
Ensuring access to reliable information during severe weather is also a key priority. The battery-powered radio included in each pack will help individuals stay connected to local updates, advice, and emergency information even during power outages, which is essential for safety and peace of mind.
This Traveller-led initiative aims to support those who may not have the means to adequately prepare for hazardous weather—particularly individuals and families who were significantly impacted during last year’s severe storms. By providing practical tools, comfort items, and opportunities for connection, Meath Travellers Workshop is working to ensure that at least 50 households across the county can remain safe, warm, and informed throughout the winter season.
Meath Travellers Workshop is proud to deliver this community-focused project and remains committed to promoting safety, wellbeing, and inclusion for Traveller and settled communities alike.
