EirGrid, the operator and developer of Ireland’s electricity grid has announced the Best Performing Option for the East Meath-North Dublin grid upgrade.

This will see a high-capacity, 400kV underground connection built between Woodland substation, near Batterstown in County Meath, and Belcamp substation near Clonshaugh.

After the prior announcement of the Emerging Best Performing Option in March of this year, further assessments have taken place, as well as continued engagement with landowners, communities and statutory stakeholders to ensure that all factors are considered in determining the most deliverable route.

The resulting Best Performing Option is the refinement of that chosen route along the project corridor, which crosses the River Tolka, the railway at M3 Parkway, along with the M1, M2 and M3 motorways. The proposed route has an overall length of approximately 38km, with an off-road section of approximately 11 kilometres. The best performing option route can be found here

These works are needed to strengthen the grid in order to cater for increased electricity demand in the region due to economic development and population growth. It will also assist in reducing the use of, and reliance upon, fossil fuels for power generation, as we transition towards a cleaner greener electricity network.
