Dr Ailbhe Murphy Research Residency awarded to Vanessa Daws

Create is pleased to announce Vanessa Daws as the recipient of the Dr Ailbhe Murphy Research Residency.

Vanessa is a visual artist whose work explores place through swimming. Her art projects invite, involve and collaborate with different communities of interest and place. She will use this Research Residency to explore our relationship to the water that surrounds us and the creatures in it, from a swimmer’s point of view, connecting with the Dublin Bay Biosphere. She plans to research the history of open water swimming in Dublin and Ireland, in particular women’s swimming. She also intends to research other artists and groups who work in an embedded art practice and a geographical way.

The Research Residency, part funded by the Arts Council of Ireland, is designed to support an established collaborative arts practitioner with a research-focused practice. Vanessa will be hosted in Create’s new Reading Room and Archive, and supported to access material within these collections. Access is offered to one-to-one sessions with Create staff as well as key staff at the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) and the National Irish Visual Arts Library (NIVAL, based at NCAD). This Residency will begin in September 2025.

Nach Cuma? Who Cares? is an exhibition that explores the politics of care and responsibility with a focus on class and race within working class communities in Dublin. Developed out of a series of collaborative workshops with youth and adult groups in Rialto, Bluebell and Ballymun the project responds to an alarming rise in hate-driven rhetoric and division, particularly within working-class spaces.

This exhibition follows on from Carey’s earlier work Stones, which focused on the relationship between individuals and place in Ballymun. Through visual, social, and dialogic forms, Nach Cuma? offers not conclusions but a methodology: one of listening, reflection, and accountability.

The exhibition will be opened by Willa White.

It begins in the galleries of IMMA and where you will take part in a series of Saturday afternoon slow-art tours designed to provoke your senses and deepen your connection with selected works from the museum’s permanent collection.

Then, guided by choreographer and filmmaker Jonathan Mitchell, you’ll respond physically to an artwork that resonates with you to capture your own moving signature – your unique trace.

These moving signatures will be filmed and shared as a series of citizen reviews through IMMA. They will also become the building blocks of a new dance work, co-created during Sunday sessions at CoisCéim Studio. This collective response to the artworks will be performed at IMMA in November and captured in a short dance film.

Read more about our Promotional Guidelines and how to submit your event or opportunity for possible promotion by Create. We only promote opportunities in which the artist is paid, in line with our Artists’ Pay Policy.
