NEW GUIDEBOOK: We will be launching ‘A Guide to Running in the 2029 Local Elections’, in the coming months. It will be bigger, brighter, better than before, bursting with information that will be of use to candidates as we head towards LE2029. It includes great tips and advice, having learned a lot during our first election cycle, back in 2024. It will act as an essential guide for anyone who is considering running in the local elections, or who wants to be part of an election team. RESEARCH: Dr Michelle Maher is putting her research skills to good use and has been criss-crossing the country to speak to as many of you as possible as part of a SHE research project on the 2024 local elections. WORKSHOPS: Our series of election preparation workshops will also return later in the year. These are always an invaluable support for anyone considering running in LE2029. You won’t want to miss them! Booking is open on SHE Academy. SCHOOLS VISITS: School may be out for summer, but we are already scheduling our visits to secondary schools this autumn, as part of our outreach programme. Reflecting on 2025 so far…
Meeting the Minister
Earlier this summer, Longford Women’s Link CEO Tara Farrell along with the SHE team, Michelle Maher, Megan Flynn Dixon and Elaine Duggan had a positive and productive meeting with Minister of State for Local Government and Planning, John Cummins and his team in Dublin, in May. This was a great opportunity for us share with the Minister the work being carried out by SHE across rural Ireland in the run up to LE2029. The SHE programme, which is managed by Longford Women’s Link is funded by the Irish Government’s Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.
50 Things Workshops
We had more than 80 women sign up to our online workshops, ‘Top 50 Things You Can Do Between Now and Local Elections 2029’. Facilitated by political strategist and former journalist Kathleen O’Meara, these sessions introduced participants to some of the 50 actions they can take, leading up to the next local elections – starting now. The workshops offered step-by-step insights into how to build their profile and other practical skills. Dr. Michelle Maher, SHE Programme Manager said: “We know that running for election can feel overwhelming therefore the best preparation is to start now. These 50 steps break it down into manageable actions you can start today. Your journey to 2029 starts now.” CEO of Longford Women’s Link Tara Farrell added: “We are already preparing for 2029 and encourage every woman with ambition to be elected to her local council to reach out to SHE.” To access our ’50 Things’ below, list see SHE Academy.
In-person Workshops and Events
We continue to be inspired and energised by the women we meet at workshops across the country. So far in 2025 we have hosted workshops and events with Roscommon County Council, Mayo County Council, Tipperary Public Participation Network and Leitrim Public Participation Network. There will also be more to come in 2025. Keep an eye out to see if we will be coming to a community near you…
7 Women Elected Cathaoirleach
Only seven women were elected to serve as Cathaoirleach (Chairperson or Mayor) across 31 local authorities. Programme Manager Dr Michelle Maher says: “It’s not enough to celebrate the few — we must work to change the system so that women are no longer the exception in leadership, but the norm”. Read more and see our heat map in more detail here.
