ICCL is delighted to host a panel discussion event on Wednesday 11 June: Democracy Under Attack: Can Ireland Resist the Global Decline? where we will consider the resilience of Irish democracy against the backdrop of rising authoritarianism in Europe and beyond.

When: Wednesday 11 June, 7.00pm – 8.30pm

Where: National College of Ireland, Mayor Street, IFSC, Dublin 1

Who:    Professor Mary Murphy, Department of Sociology, Maynooth University

Sinéad O’Carroll, Editor, The Journal

Oisín O’Reilly, Chief Executive Officer, Outhouse LGBTQ+ Centre

Our panel of speakers will explore global trends and discuss the risks, potential challenges and emerging vulnerabilities for Ireland. They will consider questions including:

  • What is the playbook for undermining democracy in neighbouring countries and what are the current risks for Ireland
  • What role do Big Tech actors and mis- and disinformation play in sowing division, distorting political campaigns and undermining trust in democratic institutions?
  • How resilient is Irish democracy? Where are the emerging fault lines and what steps can we take to strengthen democratic institutions and norms?
  • How can we engage Irish citizens more effectively to avoid alienation and apathy?
