Kells Local Heroes – Hay Making Day – Saturday 13th August 2016

As part of the Kells Community Biodiversity Action Plan Kells local Heroes is planning a Hay Making Day.

On Saturday 13th August 2016 we will be cutting an area of land on Maudlin Road, Kells. Using traditional hay making methods the area will be cut by hand and the site then managed for wildflowers mimicking traditional hay meadow management.

We are planning to make this an annual event, and with the involvement of the local community we are hoping for it to be a fun, educational few hours for all.

With the involvement of children from the area we plan to produce an educational billboard highlighting the importance of pollinators, and this will be coupled with ‘Pollinator Planters’ along- side the grassy bank as well as insect hotels, nesting boxes and bug boxes.

In bygone years this was a community event in the true sense of the word where neighbours helped each other in turn to get the job done with the promise of a grand cup of tea, a sandwich or two and maybe even cake !! when all was done.

We would be delighted to have your involvement in the project or by joining us on the day to re-create and enjoy this true community event.
